Bringing Science to Schools!
Through its online portal www.wissenschaft-schulen.de, the Bringing Science to Schools! (WIS) project offers teachers a range of materials that they can download free of charge and provides an overview of interesting science projects. WIS is an initiative of the Spektrum der Wissenschaft Verlagsgesellschaft mbH in partnership with the public authority for further education and personnel development at schools in Bad Wildbad and the Haus der Astronomie.
Founded in 2001 by then editor-in-chief of Sterne und Weltraum magazine Jakob Staude, WIS Astronomy is the oldest of the WIS projects. Since 2003, month after month WIS Astronomy has been producing educational materials that incorporate current research directly into physics, science and technology (subject group in Baden-Württemberg) and also astronomy lessons. Each lesson is based around an article from the current issue of Sterne und Weltraum.
The WIS Astronomy articles are written by a team of teachers, education experts and astronomers, and are coordinated and supervised by Dr. Olaf Fischer. The project was sponsored by the Klaus Tschira Foundation between 2005 and 2009. Since December 2009, WIS Astronomy has been run by the Haus der Astronomie, the centre for astronomical education and public outreach located at the Königstuhl in Heidelberg. The scope of the cooperation includes not only creating WIS materials, but also developing hands-on experiments for schools and implementing further education courses based on WIS Astronomy topics.
